What Is an Impression Perfume? And How Different Is It From the Original?
Over the last few years the term “impression perfume” has become common in Pakistan. Many people assume it is just another word for fake. It is not.
Impression Perfume, Fake and Original — Three Different Things
Original / Designer perfume
Made by the brand itself. Creed Aventus, Dior Sauvage, YSL Y. Prices run from Rs. 40,000 to over Rs. 1,50,000.
Fake / First copy
A factory copies the original’s bottle, logo and packaging and claims it is the original. This is illegal. Nobody knows what is inside — usually cheap industrial alcohol and poor-quality oils.
Impression / Inspired
A brand states openly: “we have created a similar scent profile under our own name, in our own bottle.” No false claim, no copied logo. This is completely legal and operates as an established industry worldwide.
Why Is an Impression Perfume Legal?
Trademark law protects a brand’s name, logo and packaging — not the smell itself.
A fragrance cannot be patented. Anyone can create their own version of a scent, as long as they do not copy the brand name or bottle design.
That is why these products carry their own names — Legacy, Aura, Zenith — and the label reads “inspired by” or “impression of”, never “this is”.
How Much Does Quality Actually Differ?
Honestly: it does differ. How much depends on the brand.
What comes close
- Opening notes — the first 15-30 minutes are often very close
- Overall character — people usually recognise what it is inspired by
- Longevity — a good impression EDP can match the original
Where the gap shows
- The dry-down. Originals use 20-40 ingredients that unfold over hours. Impressions typically use 10-15, so the scent stays flatter
- Rare materials. Real ambergris, oud and natural jasmine absolute are extremely expensive, so synthetics are substituted
- Batch consistency. Large houses keep every bottle identical; smaller brands can vary slightly
How To Judge a Good Impression Perfume
- Is it EDP? 15%+ concentration, not EDT. See our EDP vs EDT guide
- Are notes listed? A brand that hides its notes is not trustworthy
- Does it say “inspired by” rather than “original”? Any brand claiming to be the original is selling a fake
- Are the reviews real? Look for verified purchases
- Is there a return policy? A sign of confidence
Who Should Buy One
It makes sense if
- You love an expensive scent but the budget is not there
- You need something for daily office or university wear — using an expensive bottle every day is wasteful
- You want to try new scents without risking Rs. 50,000
- You are buying a gift and do not know the person’s taste
It does not make sense if
- You are a collector who wants the exact dry-down
- The bottle and presentation matter to you
- You simply will not get past it not being “the original” — a perfectly fair position
The Pakistani Context
Here, the real comparison is not “original vs impression”. It is “fake vs impression”.
Most people paying Rs. 5,000 to 15,000 for “original Sauvage” are buying a fake without knowing it. An impression is the honest option in that same budget: you know exactly what you are getting, and the formulation is proper.
